Drug intelligence / Profile preview
6-Deoxy-6-[18F]fluoro-L-ascorbic acid (18F-FAA) is a fluorine-18 labeled radiopharmaceutical analogue of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) developed as a positron emission tomography (PET) imaging tracer. It is designed to target the sodium-dependent vitamin C transporter 2 (SVCT2, encoded by SLC23A2), which is highly expressed in various cancer types, particularly in metastatic differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). By mimicking the biodistribution of endogenous ascorbic acid, 18F-FAA PET/CT allows for the noninvasive visualization and quantification of tumor ascorbic acid uptake and oxidative stress. This imaging modality has demonstrated high diagnostic accuracy in detecting postoperative cervical lymph node metastases in patients with DTC, outperforming conventional imaging methods like ultrasound and contrast-enhanced CT, as well as 18F-FDG PET/CT in certain metastatic sites. It also serves as a potential tool for patient stratification in ascorbic acid-based therapies.
